Delight your partygoers with these fun Black Cat Halloween Crackers. Made with a savory pumpkin cheddar cream cheese spread these make perfect little bite-size snacks for kids and adults.
I love festive-themed food, and coming up with creative ways to serve an otherwise mundane appetizer is what a party is all about. The black cat is as iconically Halloween as the witch that owns it. What better way to enjoy Halloween crackers than with a trusty feline sidekick?
Serve these alongside a big bowl of Halloween Caramel Corn and some spooky Halloween drinks and you’ll be set for a fun family-friendly Halloween party.

How to make Black Olive Cats:
Step 1
Drain, rinse, and dry the olives.
Step 2
Cut the olive lengthwise in half. One of the halves will be the body of the cat.
Step 3
Cut the other half again horizontally and place this half on top of the cat’s body with the cut side at the top. This is the head. Save the other half for the tail.
Step 4
Cut a wedge out of the cat’s head to give it ears.
Step 5
Use your leftover half of the olive and cut a thin slice off. This is the tail.
Step 6
Trim the edge to make a pointed tip and attach it to the side of the body of the cat.
How to Make Pumpkin Cheddar Cream Cheese:
- Add cream cheese, cheddar cheese, pumpkin puree, garlic powder, paprika, and pepper to a large bowl and mix on medium speed until well combined.
- Spread a generous helping of the pumpkin cheese onto each cracker.
- Add the black olive cats to the center of each cracker, pushing them in gently so they are secure in the cheese spread.
Substitutions & Variations:
- Feel free to use a square or rectangular cracker if you prefer. You can even experiment with different flavored crackers for more punch.
- If you aren’t a fan of cheddar cheese, this spread is equally good with parmesan cheese or even smoked gouda. Just be sure that if you are using a hard cheese it is finely grated as you want the cheese to spread smoothly on the cracker.
Storing Halloween Crackers:
These should ideally be eaten the same day they are made to avoid a soggy cracker. However, they can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for a few hours if needed. Cover with plastic wrap before storing in the fridge.
Common Questions:
Can these be made vegan?
- Yes, just use your favorite vegan cheeses as a substitute.
Can these be made gluten-free?
- Yes, you’ll just need to swap the crackers for gluten-free crackers.
Why is my cheese spread lumpy?
- The cream cheese may not have been soft enough when you mixed it. Make sure you allow ample time for the cream cheese to soften.
- You may have used pre-shredded cheese (see next question below).
Can I use pre-shredded cheese?
- I don’t recommend it. Pre-shredded cheese from the store contains added ingredients to prevent clumping (like starch and cellulose) which makes it harder to mix the cheese to a smooth consistency.
