Take your party to the next level with this festive Spiced Pomegranate Rum Sour cocktail. It is perfect for fall gatherings or a quiet evening on the porch.

My husband absolutely loved this drink when I made it for him. The dark rum, sweet pomegranate juice, and tart lemon juice mix splendidly together, but it is the addition of cinnamon vanilla syrup that makes it a mouthwatering concoction.

This has just 4 simple ingredients and is easy to shake up when you want to impress your guests with something different. The festive dark red hue invokes a cozy fall feel and you can dress it up with a fun garnish or a fun vintage glass.

Ingredients for a Spiced Pomegranate Rum Sour Cocktail:

  • Black Spiced Rum. While I typically do not use Spiced Rum in most cocktails, it lends itself perfectly to my Pomegranate Rum Sour. It adds just a touch of spice and blends well with the Cinnamon Vanilla Syrup.
  • Pomegranate Juice. Delicious and full of antioxidants (bonus!).
  • Lemon Juice. This will give it the much-needed sour every cocktail needs. Fresh squeezed is always best, but bottled juice can also work…just make sure it is not from concentrate. I like Santa Cruz Organic Lemon Juice.
  • Cinnamon Vanilla Syrup. This is a simple syrup you can make at home, and I highly recommend that you do, as the fresh cinnamon-infused syrup tastes so much better than store-bought. You can find my recipe here.

Tools you will need:

Garnish Options:

I used a simple orange wheel with a brandied cherry on top, but other great options would be an orange peel, a lemon twist, frozen cranberries, cinnamon sticks, or three cherries skewered on a cocktail pick. You can also mix and match any of these. Be as creative as you want!

Which Rum is best?

There are many good ones to choose from but for this recipe, I used Kraken Black Spiced Rum. It has strong notes of molasses, clove, cinnamon, and vanilla…all of which pair great with the rest of the ingredients. Other good options would be Bacardi Black, Goslings Dark Seal Rum, or Meyers Rum. All of these have subtle differences but will nonetheless add a rich complex flavor to the drink.

Can I substitute the Pomegranate Juice?

When it comes to mixing drinks just about anything is possible…just know that the end results may be a bit different and possibly not to your liking. Below are some acceptable substitutions that I will endorse:

  • Pure Cranberry Juice. This is more tart than Pomegranate juice so you’ll need to double the syrup quantity.
  • Cherry Juice. A tart cherry juice is perfect, but again you’ll need to double the syrup quantity to keep the balance.

Why is the Ice not strained in this recipe?

Good question. Many cocktails need to be strained and poured over fresh ice in order to keep the ice from melting too quickly, which will water down the drink. This cocktail works quite well with the added water and is essentially part of its ingredients. The Kraken Black Spiced Rum is a higher proof of rum, so this also helps to balance the cocktail so it is not too strong. It also simplifies the process by cutting out that step.

Can I make a large batch of this cocktail?

Absolutely! Just multiply every ingredient by the number of drinks you want to make. You can use a large mixing glass or pitcher and stir the ingredients with ice until condensation forms on the glass. To make it easier to pour the drinks you’ll want to remove the ice and pour over fresh ice.
