Whether you’re new to shelf styling or just need a fresh take for summer, I’m sharing my favorite ways to source vintage summer kitchen décor, how I style shelves that feel both functional and fun, and a few tricks for telling a story with your space.

The kitchen is one of my favorite spaces to decorate in our home. Each season, I like to give the shelves a little refresh to reflect the mood of the moment and tell a new story.
Red has always been my favorite color to work with—it’s cheerful, bold, and surprisingly versatile. This summer, I paired it with light blue, sunny yellow, and soft pastel greens to create a vibrant summer produce theme.
The vintage “Cherries” sign—snagged at a barn sale years ago—is the anchor that set the tone for my entire summer shelf story.

Sourcing Summer Kitchen Décor: Where to Find the Good Stuff
There are three main ways I score vintage summer finds:
Thrifting
My year-round go-to. It’s accessible, inexpensive, and constantly changing. I never leave without browsing the “old lady glass” aisle—as my children like to call it. There’s always a quirky dish or forgotten treasure waiting to be rescued.
Garage Sales
My favorite method, hands down. You’ll find the best deals (and the most unexpected gems), but it takes more effort—early mornings (ugh), dusty-digging, and lots of driving. It’s a true summer ritual and worth every oddball encounter.
Antiquing
When I want something special—or just want a pleasant, air-conditioned browse—I head to antique stores. The prices are higher, but so are the chances you’ll find something perfect. You’ll be able to complete your dream look a bit faster this way.
Etsy & eBay
When I have a very specific piece in mind (hello, Jadeite restaurant ware mugs), online vintage sellers from Etsy and eBay come to the rescue. You’ll have to add shipping to the price tag, but sometimes it’s worth it for a unique piece you know you’ll never find in the wild.
Pro Tip: Keep A List
Keep a running wishlist in your phone and run through it before you go out hunting. This way you won’t forget what you are looking for when it’s staring you right in the face.

Shelf Styling Tips That Actually Work
These are the “rules” I (mostly) live by when styling shelves:
Stick to a Color Story
If you’re using multiple colors, make sure they complement each other and feel cohesive. Make sure and tie in those colors on every shelf for continuity.
Use Odd Numbers
The rule of threes (or fives) is real. Grouping in odd numbers just feels more natural and balanced to the eye.
Play with Height
Mix tall items with shorter ones to create movement and draw the eye around the space. This keeps things from feeling flat or static.
Save This!
Layer It Up
Layer horizontally with trays, books, or shallow bowls. Then layer vertically with framed art, small mirrors, wall plates, or even leaning cookbooks. Layers add depth, which oddly enough makes things look less cluttered.

Pro Tip: Secure It!
If you’re leaning plates or other breakables on your shelves, consider securing them with a non-permanent adhesive like Gorilla Mounting Putty. It keeps everything in place without damaging your pieces—or your sanity.

Décor You Can Actually Use (Because This Is a Kitchen, After All)
I firmly believe beautiful things should earn their keep.
Instead of loading up shelves with purely decorative pieces, mix in items you actually use:
- Stack your favorite vintage plates (and eat off them!)
- Display a well-loved mixing bowl for summer baking
- Line up thrifted mugs that double as daily coffee companions
Displaying pieces you use regularly is a great way to keep your kitchen both charming and practical—and it saves cabinet space too.

Things I Actually Use From My Summer Kitchen Décor:
- The blue mixing bowl isn’t just for show—I actually use it for summer baking sessions.
- The cottage-shaped cookie jar holds tea packets (though my kids keep hoping it’s full of cookies).
- That little blue floral creamer? It’s my go-to spot for stashing hair ties—because you never know when one will come in handy.
- I use the strawberry jar and bird jar to hide gum and sweet treats, while the vintage Dutch girl planter makes the perfect little phone cubby.
- And those jadeite cups? They’re reserved for my much-needed cappuccino break at the end of a long workday.

Decorating with Pieces That Tell a Story
Now here’s where it gets fun: tell a summer story with your shelves.
- Maybe it’s a Vintage Picnic scene: a classic red Thermos, enamel mugs, a worn wicker picnic basket, and a stack of gingham napkins ready for lemonade and sandwiches. Add in a vintage pie tin or old-school soda bottle to finish the look.
- Or lean into a Coastal New England look with vintage lobster plates, blue mason jars, sea-worn driftwood, and maybe even a framed print of a fishing boat. Finish it off with a milk glass vase full of soft blue hydrangeas.
- Or perhaps your shelves want to bloom with a Summer Garden theme—think floral glassware in punchy colors, old watering cans turned vases, and quirky vintage flower frogs arranged like mini sculptures. Tuck in a garden trowel or seed packet collection to add interest.
This storytelling approach makes your shelves feel personal—like they have a soul, not just a style.
The point is to curate a moment—not just a display. What moments or moods feel like summer to you? Channel that.

If you’re styling your shelves for summer, I’d love to see them! Drop a photo in the comments—I’m always up for a little shelf envy.
Here’s to Summer!
